Academic activities at University of Jos have been thrown into uncertainty after the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike over unpaid March 2026 salaries and outstanding allowances.
The industrial action, which took effect on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, mandates lecturers to immediately withdraw from all academic and administrative duties, including lectures, examinations, and statutory meetings.
In a statement signed by Branch Chairperson, Jurbe Molwus, the union said the decision followed months of patience despite persistent delays in salary payments and the omission of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) from staff remuneration.
“Our members are hereby directed to abstain from all official duties as our March 2026 salary remains unpaid despite repeated engagements,” the statement read.
ASUU attributed the payment delay to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, noting that the university’s bursary department had already completed its part of the process.
The union warned that the situation is eroding industrial harmony and cautioned authorities against taking the goodwill of its members for granted.
“It appears our patience is being taken for granted by those responsible for ensuring timely payment,” the union added.
To enforce compliance, ASUU announced the activation of a strike monitoring team, signaling a firm stance with no immediate resolution in sight.
The development is expected to significantly disrupt academic schedules at the University of Jos, with students facing fresh uncertainty just as the institution attempts to stabilize its academic calendar.
