In a video shared on his X formerly Known as Twitter and Facebook handles, Cruz described Nigeria as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians, claiming that tens of thousands have been killed since 2009, alongside the destruction of thousands of churches and religious institutions.

The senator pointed to recent kidnappings during the Easter period as evidence of what he called a sustained pattern of attacks against Christians. He criticised both federal and state authorities, arguing that officials have either downplayed the severity of the crisis or failed to respond effectively.

Cruz also referenced the implementation of Sharia and blasphemy laws in some northern states, suggesting they contribute to an environment that enables religious persecution.

Calling for international intervention, the lawmaker highlighted his proposed legislation, the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act, which seeks to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over violations of religious freedom. The bill also recommends targeted sanctions against officials found to be complicit in such abuses.

He urged the United States government to identify and sanction individuals at both state and federal levels allegedly linked to these violations.

Cruz further disclosed that he had previously engaged with Nigerian defence and security officials, who assured him of efforts to address the situation. However, he maintained that conditions on the ground have not improved.

Referencing earlier actions under U.S. President Donald Trump—including Nigeria’s placement on a religious freedom watchlist—Cruz questioned the lack of progress and called for renewed pressure on Nigerian authorities.

The senator’s remarks come amid increasing international scrutiny of Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly concerning violence affecting religious communities.
