President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The brief ceremony held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marks a key step in the President’s effort to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral institution ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Professor Amupitan, a renowned legal scholar and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure recently ended.
Speaking after the swearing-in, President Tinubu urged the new INEC boss to uphold the principles of transparency, neutrality, and credibility in the management of Nigeria’s elections.
He emphasized that credible elections are fundamental to democracy and national stability, urging Amupitan to “build trust, embrace reforms, and ensure that every vote counts.”
In his remarks, Professor Amupitan pledged to discharge his duties with integrity and fairness, assuring Nigerians that the commission under his leadership will consolidate electoral gains and improve logistics, technology, and voter confidence.
The appointment of Amupitan has drawn mixed reactions across the country, with many Nigerians expressing cautious optimism about his capacity to deliver credible elections in 2027.
