At least two people have been confirmed dead and one remains missing after arm Fulani Militias launched a pre-dawn attack on Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The assault, which occurred around 3 a.m. on Thursday 23rd April 2026, reportedly caught residents off guard as the attackers stormed the community and opened fire while people were asleep, sparking panic and confusion.
Confirming the incident, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, said local vigilantes have begun a search operation for the missing resident.
“The attackers invaded the community in the early hours while residents were asleep,” he stated.
The latest violence has further heightened tensions across Riyom LGA, where communities are already facing challenges linked to the destruction of farmlands, all by Fulani herders in nearby Jol.
BYM President, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, described the situation as deteriorating and warned of serious consequences if urgent intervention is not made.
“The seized cattle represent only a fraction of those involved and cannot compensate for even half of the losses suffered by the affected farmers,” the group said.
According to the association, over 50 hectares of irrigation farmland have been destroyed within days, severely impacting livelihoods and raising concerns over food security in the area.
The group has called for an immediate halt to grazing activities in affected communities, alongside demands for compensation, increased security presence, and decisive government action.
“The community’s patience is being severely tested we cannot guarantee sustained calm if these injustices persist unchecked,” the statement added.
