Fulani militias have killed the Director of Social of the Miango Youth Development Association (MYDA), Mr. John Telle Danjuma, in an ambush along the Gyu (Twins Hill) axis in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria’s Middle Belt, late on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.plunging the Irigwe community into fresh grief and reigniting alarm over the relentless targeting of its people.
Danjuma, popularly known as Excoba is in his early thirties, was ambushed by armed assailants in the late hours of the night while travelling along the route. He had assumed office as MYDA Director of Social only two months ago.
The Miango Youth Development Association confirmed the killing in a press release signed by its Publicity Secretary, Weyi Agara, describing the attack as part of what the organisation called “a systematic agenda of total cleansing against the Irigwe people.”
“Mr. Danjuma was a devoted servant of his fatherland and humanity,” MYDA said in the statement. “His life was cut short in active service.”
He is survived by a young wife and a son.
The attack on the Gyu axis-a stretch that has witnessed recurring militia violence comes amid escalating insecurity across Plateau State, where Irigwe communities in Bassa Local Government Area have faced repeated armed assaults attributed to Fulani militias over recent years.
MYDA’s characterisation of the killing as part of a broader pattern of ethnic targeting echoes earlier calls by community leaders and civil society groups for federal and state authorities to end what they describe as deliberate, sustained violence against the Irigwe.
Security forces and the Plateau State Government are yet to issue a statement on the killing as of the time of filling this report.
