A concerned resident of Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State has issued a passionate appeal to Senator Diket Plang, urging him to give Kanam the same level of attention and strong advocacy he reportedly demonstrated for Mangu and Bokkos during their periods of violent attacks.
In an open letter addressed to the lawmaker representing Plateau Central Senatorial District, Taru Salim Dugub expressed deep frustration over what he described as continuous killings, kidnappings, and destruction of homes in Garga, Kantana, and other surrounding communities in Kanam LGC.
According to Dugub, Kanam is currently facing security challenges similar to those that previously affected Mangu and Bokkos, which he said attracted national attention and strong representation at the Senate.
“Are our lives not equal? Do we not deserve the same urgency, compassion, and representation?” the letter asked, reflecting what he described as the growing concern among residents.
The letter alleged that for over a year, repeated attacks have led to the loss of innocent lives, displacement of families from ancestral homes, and destruction of properties, with fear becoming a daily reality for many residents.
Dugub stated that despite the ongoing crisis, many citizens feel they have not heard strong advocacy on their behalf at the Red Chamber nor witnessed the physical presence of their senator in affected communities during this critical period.
He emphasized that Kanam remains an integral part of the Plateau Central Senatorial Zone and noted that the people entrusted Senator Plang with the mandate to represent their interests at the National Assembly.
“Every day, innocent lives are lost. Families are displaced, houses are burned, and fear has become the daily reality of our people,” he wrote.
The concerned citizen called for urgent legislative motions, sustained advocacy, and coordinated engagement with security agencies to draw national attention and secure federal intervention aimed at ending the insecurity in Kanam.
Citing leadership quotes from John Maxwell and Nelson Mandela, Dugub stressed that true leadership is tested in moments of crisis and urged the senator to visit affected areas, console victims, and visibly identify with grieving communities.
He maintained that the appeal was not written out of disrespect but out of deep concern and frustration, urging leaders to set politics aside and prioritize the protection of lives and restoration of peace.
“Our parents, grandparents, brothers, and sisters are living in fear. Silence at such a time feels heavy to those experiencing daily tragedy,” the letter stated.
Residents of Kanam, according to Dugub, are watching closely and hoping for decisive action that will restore confidence, security, and lasting peace to their communities.
