The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Plateau State chapter, has urged PLASIEC to explain its apparent silence over preparations for the October 2026 local government elections.
The party made the call in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Hon. Yusuf Sani Umar, amid growing concerns over the absence of an electoral timetable and other preparations for the polls.
The DLA said political parties, stakeholders and voters had yet to receive official information from the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) on the timetable or arrangements for conducting the elections.
“The party calls on PLASIEC to immediately explain to the people of Plateau State the reasons behind its silence and apparent inaction,” the statement said.
It said the commission was expected to adopt a more proactive and transparent approach, particularly given the professional record of its chairman during his previous service with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The DLA also urged PLASIEC to comply with constitutional provisions governing local government administration and ensure that elections are conducted in line with the expiration of the two-year tenure of elected local government councils.
The party expressed concern over what it described as actions by the leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Plateau State chapter, which it alleged appeared to support moves to extend the tenure of elected council officials.
“Any attempt to extend the tenure of elected Local Government officials outside the law is unacceptable and contrary to democratic principles,” the party said.
The DLA further called on the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Plateau State chapter, to resist what it described as any anti-democratic actions capable of weakening democratic institutions.
It also urged IPAC to revive its proposed assessment of the performance of the Plateau State Government and local government chairmen.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, the rule of law and constitutional governance, urging stakeholders to ensure that the October local government elections are conducted in accordance with the Constitution and Nigeria’s electoral laws.
