A civil society organisation, the Rights and Anti-Corruption Forum of Nigeria (RACFN), has filed a petition against the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Delta State, Superintendent Bright Edafe, accusing him of misconduct, sexism, and partisan political activity.
In a petition dated September 2025 and addressed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Police Service Commission, the Minister of Police Affairs, the National Human Rights Commission, and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Asaba branch, the group alleged that Edafe had repeatedly violated the Nigeria Police Act 2020 (as amended) and the Police Code of Conduct through several controversial social media posts.
Among the evidence cited was a Facebook post dated August 29, 2012, in which Edafe wrote: “Nigeria women are the worst drivers on earth.” RACFN described the comment as reckless, misogynistic, and a direct insult to Nigerian women, urging the police cybercrime unit to preserve the post as digital evidence even if deleted.

The group also accused the officer of political bias, pointing to a 2011 Facebook post in which he endorsed former President Goodluck Jonathan for the presidency. However, in 2012, the same account carried a post attacking Jonathan, then Nigeria’s sitting president, describing his televised speech as “rubbish” and accusing him of deceiving Nigerians.

Other posts attributed to Edafe allegedly questioned the legitimacy of the Nigerian state and the capacity of the police. On January 30, 2014, he reportedly wrote: “What a lawless nation… you must protect yourself by yourself, there is nothing the government or police can do for you in this country.” In July 2014, he further alleged that the federal government was using Boko Haram as an excuse to embezzle security funds.

The petition stressed that such remarks were unbecoming of a senior officer and violated Section 92 of the Police Act, which demands integrity, neutrality, and respect for human rights from members of the force.
“Edafe’s conduct undermines public trust in the Nigeria Police Force, erodes confidence in its neutrality, and encourages lawlessness and discrimination,” the petition stated.
The group also highlighted a more recent incident where Edafe posted a video of himself driving without wearing a seatbelt, which they argued showed disregard for traffic laws he was expected to enforce.
RACFN called for a full disciplinary probe by the Police Disciplinary Committee, as well as investigations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Code of Conduct Bureau.
The petition concluded that strict sanctions against the officer would send a strong message that misconduct, partisanship, and discriminatory behaviour will not be tolerated within the Nigeria Police Force.
Following the petition written on the Delta Police PRO,the rights group also petitions the DSS and the Nigeria Police Force over “Double Standards” in handling case of citizens and Police officers which it’s purely an act of selective justice and oppression.
In a strong worded petition signed by the Group’s Director of operations Hon.Comrade Prince Ogbonna,RACFN question why Activist Omoyele Sowore is being dragged through multiple court trials for describing the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “Criminal” white Superintendent of Police Bright Edafe the Delta State Police PRO continue to serve in uniform despite a record of inflammatory, partisan and discriminatory social media post.
In an interview with the Nigerian Times on Friday morning, the Group argued that if Sowore’s expression of opinion warranted harsh action then Edafe’s conduct which include insulting Former Nigerian President, demeaning women,and openly questioning the legitimacy of the Nigerian state should attract more severe heavy consequences.
In it’s conclusion,RACFN warned that the credibility of Nigeria’s Justice system is at stake “If the DSS can sacrifice Sowore on the altar of ego, then SP Edafe Bright must not be spared”
The group urged the DSS Director General,the IGP, and other stakeholders to treat the matter with urgency warning that posterity is watching how the case is handled.
