Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly, high-tech assault on Nigerian troops in Ngamdu, Borno State Nigeria, using armed drones, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), killing four soldiers and injuring five others.
The coordinated attack, which targeted troops of Operation HADIN KAI’s 29 Task Force Brigade, aimed to overrun military positions and destroy critical assets. Despite the intensity, the Army said its forces “stood firm” and repelled the attackers after a fierce battle.
Military spokesman Lt. Col. Sani Uba confirmed the casualties, saying, “The terrorists attempted to overwhelm our positions using RPGs, armed drones, and coordinated IED strikes, but our troops responded with superior firepower.”
Several Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles and gun trucks were damaged, while the insurgents planted IEDs along the Ngamdu Damaturu Main Supply Route (MSR) to slow reinforcements. Army engineers swiftly cleared three explosive-laden points and reopened the route for troop movement.
Intelligence reports indicate the insurgents suffered heavy losses, with at least 15 fighters reportedly buried near Bula Wura, close to Wasaram. The Army has since launched aggressive patrols to prevent regrouping and maintain control of strategic areas.
The use of armed drones by Boko Haram marks a dangerous escalation in Nigeria’s counterinsurgency war, raising concerns over the group’s growing access to advanced weaponry.
Operation HADIN KAI, launched in 2021 to replace Operation LAFIYA DOLE, continues to combat Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in Nigeria’s North-East despite sporadic asymmetric attacks.
