Concerns are growing among students and parents over safety ahead of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), as candidates report being posted to areas affected by recent insecurity in Plateau State.
The anxiety follows a series of attacks across several local government areas, including Jos North, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Riyom, and Mangu. Many candidates scheduled to sit for the examination say they are uneasy about travelling to these locations.
A candidate, Afodia Joseph, described her posting to Bokkos as worrying, noting that recent violence in the area has made her fearful for her safety. She questioned the measures in place to protect candidates during the examination period.
Similarly, John Lazarus, who was posted to a centre in Katako, expressed uncertainty about security arrangements, saying the situation has left him deeply concerned.
Parents have also raised alarm, urging authorities to prioritise the safety of candidates. One parent, Roseline Moses, stressed that no student should be exposed to risk while trying to access education, especially in areas known for security challenges.
Reacting to the development, the Jos North chapter of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to urgently review its posting strategy.
The association’s chairman, Abdullahi Salihu Malami, said the concerns stem from widespread complaints by parents, schools, and faith-based groups. He noted that candidates are being assigned to distant and security-sensitive locations without adequate consideration for safety and logistics.
Malami warned that the current arrangement not only exposes candidates to danger but also places financial and transportation burdens on families. He added that the situation could lead to lateness, absenteeism, and ultimately poor performance.
With candidates expected to report to examination centres as early as 6:30 a.m., stakeholders are urging authorities to ensure postings are both safe and accessible.
