A United States congressman has stated that recent American military strikes in Nigeria are only the beginning, dismissing fears they will lead to war.
Rep. Riley Moore said President Donald Trump’s action brought “peace and security” and hope to Christians facing violence. He said thousands have been killed, with 600,000 displaced in Benue State alone.
The comments follow Trump’s confirmation of a “powerful and deadly strike” against ISIS fighters in northwest Nigeria on Christmas, which he said was punishment for targeting Christians.
The U.S. Africa Command stated the airstrike was done at Nigeria’s request. Residents in Sokoto State reported a loud explosion causing panic on the night of the attack.
Moore emphasized the operations were coordinated with the Nigerian government and that more actions are expected.
