JOS, Nigeria — Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have killed six terrorists in a series of intelligence-led operations across Plateau State, recovered three locally fabricated rifles, and foiled an attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, where one assailant was shot dead.
The Joint Task Force disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday June 2nd 2026 by its Media Information Officer, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, saying the operations formed part of sustained offensives to dismantle terrorist networks operating within the Joint Operations Area.
According to the statement, troops of Sector 6, acting on credible intelligence, raided the Gero Highground in Jos South Local Government Area on June 26 following reports of terrorist activities in the area.
The troops came under heavy gunfire from the suspects, who allegedly used livestock as cover during the exchange. Reinforcements were immediately deployed, forcing the terrorists to abandon their hideout and flee.
The statement said troops pursued the fleeing suspects, killing some of them, while others escaped with gunshot wounds. Follow-up operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
In a separate operation on the same day, troops of Sector 5 intercepted a motorcycle transporting two passengers from Kuba District in Bokkos Local Government Area to Maijanki in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. The passengers reportedly fled on sighting the troops, abandoning a bag containing three locally fabricated rifles.
The motorcycle rider was arrested but claimed he was unaware of the passengers’ mission. Investigations are ongoing.
On June 30 2026, troops acting on fresh intelligence ambushed suspected terrorists gathering around the Rafin Bauna/Gero mountains in Jos South Local Government Area. Five suspects were killed during the operation, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
According to the task force, preliminary battle damage assessment, corroborated by local community members, indicated that some of those killed had been on the military’s wanted list for allegedly orchestrating several attacks in Jos South and Bassa local government areas.
The military also confirmed the attempted attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Jos South Local Government Area on Wednesday night.
Captain Oteh said troops deployed to protect the institute came under attack at about 11 p.m. after suspected terrorists breached the perimeter through a low section of the fence under the cover of darkness.
He said the troops responded decisively, killing one of the attackers and forcing the others to flee.
The body of the slain suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation, while the recovered arms and ammunition remain in military custody.
Operation Enduring Peace reiterated its commitment to denying criminal elements freedom of operation across Plateau State and assured residents that sustained security operations would continue to safeguard lives, property and restore lasting peace.
