Stakeholders of the Obidient Movement and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kaduna South Senatorial District have called on the party leadership to zone its governorship ticket for the 2027 election to Southern Kaduna, arguing that the region’s strong support for the movement in the 2023 general elections deserves recognition.

The demand was made during a press conference held in Kaduna on Tuesday by leaders of the Obidient Movement and NDC stakeholders from the Southern Senatorial Zone.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the Coordinator of the Obidient Movement and NDC stakeholders in Southern Kaduna, Pastor Isaac Ango Makama, said the call was based on principles of justice, inclusion, political equity, and the need to reward loyalty to the ideals of the party.

The stakeholders also congratulated the leadership of the NDC on what they described as the successful conduct of its recently concluded primaries.

According to Makama, Southern Kaduna emerged as one of the strongest support bases for Mr. Peter Obi and the Labour Party during the 2023 general elections, with voters in the region overwhelmingly supporting a platform built on accountability, competence, national unity, and political change.

“The voting pattern from Southern Kaduna was not accidental,” he said. “It reflected the aspirations of a people who have consistently advocated fairness, equity, good governance, and inclusive leadership.”

He argued that as the NDC positions itself as a viable alternative political platform in Kaduna State, it should not overlook the commitment demonstrated by Southern Kaduna voters during the last election cycle.

The stakeholders maintained that zoning the governorship ticket to Kaduna South Senatorial District would not merely be a political concession but an acknowledgment of the sacrifices and democratic commitment of a people who have remained steadfast in the pursuit of a better Kaduna State.

They further noted that Southern Kaduna possesses numerous qualified men and women with the experience, competence, and vision required to govern the state effectively.

The group also pointed to the zoning arrangements reportedly adopted by other political parties. According to the stakeholders, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have favoured candidates from Kaduna Central Senatorial District, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has zoned its governorship ticket to Kaduna North Senatorial District.

They argued that this presents a strategic opportunity for the NDC to broaden its electoral appeal by selecting a candidate from Southern Kaduna.

“We are convinced that presenting a governorship candidate from Southern Kaduna will strengthen the NDC’s electoral prospects by inspiring confidence among voters who seek a departure from the old political order,” the statement said.

The stakeholders stressed that their demand was peaceful, democratic, and aimed at strengthening party unity rather than creating division among the state’s various political and ethnic constituencies.

They called on the national and state leadership of the NDC, including party leaders, youth groups, women leaders, and other stakeholders, to support the zoning of the governorship ticket to Southern Kaduna ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to them, the future of any political party depends on its willingness to reward loyalty, recognize sacrifice, and embrace inclusion.

The statement was signed by Pastor Isaac Ango Makama, Coordinator of the Obidient Movement and NDC Stakeholders in Kaduna South Senatorial District.
