NIPSS DG Apologises to Berom Nation, Writes Gbong Gwom Over ‘Militia’ Comment

By Palang Paul

The Director General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Professor Ayo Omotayo, has apologised to the Berom Nation over his controversial remarks linking the attempted attack on the institute to “Berom militias,” expressing regret and appealing for calm.

In a letter addressed to the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Royal Majesty Da Jacob Gyang Buba, Professor Omotayo said his comments during a recent television interview were misunderstood and did not reflect an intention to accuse the Berom people or suggest the existence of any organised militia associated with the ethnic group.

The letter, dated July 6, 2026, followed widespread condemnation of the remarks by Berom leaders and stakeholders, who described the comments as false, inflammatory and capable of undermining peaceful coexistence in Plateau State.

Omotayo explained that he was responding to questions during a rapidly evolving security situation and merely referenced reports and speculations that were already circulating in the public domain.

He expressed profound regret over the misunderstanding, apologised for the unintended offence and distress caused by his remarks, and appealed to the paramount ruler to convey his message of reconciliation and goodwill to the Berom Nation.

The NIPSS Director General reaffirmed his respect for the Berom people, describing them as one of the institute’s principal host communities and long-standing partners in promoting peace, cooperation and national development.

He noted that under his leadership, the institute has implemented several community-based initiatives, including annual summer coaching programmes for students, ICT and digital skills training for youths, mentorship programmes in secondary schools, support for girl-child education and empowerment, and other community development projects aimed at strengthening relations with host communities.

According to him, the programmes demonstrate the institute’s commitment to the welfare of its host communities and its belief that their wellbeing is essential to the stability and success of NIPSS.

Omotayo also appealed to all stakeholders to remain calm, exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions while security agencies continue investigations into the attempted attack on the institute.

He reaffirmed NIPSS’ commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and constructive engagement with its host communities, pledging continued support for initiatives that promote unity, security and sustainable development.
