Five students of Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, who were kidnapped from the institution’s satellite campus in Emuoha Local Government Area on Tuesday, have been rescued unharmed.
The abduction triggered tension among students, prompting a protest in which they demanded that the school relocate them to the main campus for safety. Addressing the demonstrators, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, announced an immediate suspension of academic activities at the Emuoha campus and instructed all students living there to vacate the premises temporarily.
Confirming the rescue on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the victims were freed during an operation carried out by police tactical units in collaboration with other security agencies at Rumuodogo 2 community in Emuoha.
According to her, the five undergraduates — Prince London, Azubuike Kelechukwu, Elizabeth Aniete, Onyebuchi Precious, and London Sampson — were safely recovered and have been taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Iringe-Koko added that the kidnappers, described as suspected cultists, fled during the rescue, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend them.
“Intensive efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing abductors,” she said.
The police assured the public of their continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
