At least one person has been confirmed killed when Gunmen suspected to be Fulani terrorists attacked Ariri village in Plateau State’s Bassa Local Government Area, killing a 21-year-old man and injuring another resident.
The attack occurred about 27 Kilometres Northwest Of Jos the Plateau State Capital by 10 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, in Ariri, Nkienwhie District of Irigwe Chiefdom.
The two victims were described as Christians from Nigeria’s Middle Belt, a region that has witnessed recurring attacks on communities, with rights groups and local advocates raising concerns over violence targeting predominantly Christian populations in Africa’s most populous black Nation.
The Irigwe Youth Movement (IYM) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Spokesman Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, on Saturday 15th August 2026.
According to the statement, the victim, identified as Jonathan Mangwa Ado 21 years-old, sustained bullet injuries during the attack and later died.
Another resident, 19-year-old Joseph Ezekiel, was also shot in the leg while attempting to escape the attackers and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed location.
The group said the attack has heightened concerns over the safety of Irigwe communities, particularly their lives, farms and livelihoods, amid what it described as a deteriorating security situation.
The IYM called on the government and relevant security agencies to intensify security measures to prevent further attacks and protect residents and their means of livelihood.
The movement also disclosed that Ado was buried on Saturday morning in Ariri according to Christian rites.
The IYM expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and the wider Irigwe community, while praying for the recovery of the injured survivor.
