The Catholic Diocese of Wukari in Taraba State says renewed attacks across communities in the southern part of the state have displaced more than 98,000 people and destroyed 217 churches since September 2025.

The disclosure was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the diocese’s third General Assembly held on Saturday in Wukari and signed by the Catholic Bishop of Wukari Diocese, Bishop Mark Nzukwein.

According to the communiqué, the attacks have mainly affected communities in Takum Local Government Area, Donga Local Government Area and the Yangtu Special Development Area.

The diocese said the violence, which resurged in September 2025, has left scores of residents dead, injured and displaced, while properties and livelihoods worth millions of naira were destroyed.

“The records of the diocese show that over 98,000 persons have been displaced, including 16 priests, while 217 churches have been completely destroyed,” the communiqué stated.

It added that residences belonging to eight priests were razed during the attacks and that more than 100 people had reportedly been killed.

The diocese further accused armed groups of taking over ancestral lands abandoned by displaced residents, describing the situation as a growing humanitarian and security crisis in southern Taraba.

It called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and protect affected communities from further attacks.

The church also urged authorities at all levels to create conditions that would enable displaced residents to safely return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
