The Plateau State Government has declared that all public and private schools will resume academic activities on Monday, January 12, 2026, ending a period of closure mandated by security concerns.
The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Kachollom Pyam Gang, made the official statement, assuring parents, students, and staff of the government’s unwavering commitment to safety. The closure, a preventive measure, allowed the state to implement what the Commissioner described as “robust measures” to secure educational facilities.
A Multi-Layered Security Strategy
Central to the reopening plan is the deployment of over 1,400 security personnel trained under Operation Rainbow. These officers will conduct security patrols and work closely with local authorities and other security agencies to create a protective shield around schools and their host communities.
Furthermore, the Ministry is collaborating with Safe School Initiatives to implement additional, targeted security enhancements. The government has adopted a “see something, say something” policy, urging school communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity directly to the Ministry.
Academic Calendar and Catch-Up Plans
The resumption marks the beginning of the Second Term of the 2025/2026 academic session, as outlined in an official calendar released earlier. The term will run from January 12 to March 27, 2026.
Acknowledging lost instructional time, the Ministry has directed school administrators to organize extra classes and lessons to help students catch up. Additionally, schools are mandated to enhance health and hygiene protocols and hold regular administrative meetings to monitor progress and address concerns.
A Call for Collective Vigilance
Dr. Gang expressed deep appreciation for the patience and cooperation of all stakeholders during the closure. She issued a dual appeal: for schools to strictly adhere to the resumption schedule and safety directives, and for parents to actively monitor their children and maintain open communication with school authorities.
“We are committed to the safety of our students and staff and we will not compromise on this,” the Commissioner stated emphatically. “Let us work together to create a safe and conducive learning environment for our children.”
The government has promised a continuous review of all security measures in collaboration with relevant agencies, signaling an adaptive and sustained approach to the safety of the education sector.
