The Plateau State Government has confirmed the launch of a major military offensive in the Garga axis of Kanam Local Government Area of Nigeria Middle Belt.
Just one day after a deadly ambush by bandits left atleast 20 security personnel dead.
The development comes just 24 hours after the Kanam Development Association raised the alarm over the brutal attack on a combined team of soldiers and local vigilantes.
According to security sources, the operatives were on a routine patrol Friday when their two-vehicle convoy came under heavy fire from entrenched bandits. The assailants launched a devastating ambush, overwhelming the team and resulting in the death of the security personnel in what witnesses described as a scene of chaos.
In an emergency statement released Saturday, the state government expressed grave concern over the escalating violence and the distressing attack on the community, confirming that it has triggered an immediate and “ongoing military operation” in the area.
Residents of Kanam are being urged to remain vigilant as security forces move to root out the bandits responsible for the massacre. The development marks a significant escalation in the battle against criminal gangs terrorizing the region.
