The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has refuted the Federal Government’s claim of releasing ₦50 billion as a revitalisation fund, insisting that no such payment has reached universities.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, ASUU said none of its key demands—including withheld salaries, wage award arrears, and promotion backlogs—had been met ahead of its National Executive Council meeting scheduled for November 8–9, 2025.
“What we need are credit alerts, not press statements,” Molwus said, accusing the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, of making misleading claims about payments.
ASUU described the alleged ₦2.3bn payment for salary and promotion arrears as “a drop in the ocean,” stressing it was too small to cover even three universities.
The union warned that it may resume its suspended strike if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands by November 21, 2025, when its four-week ultimatum expires.
“The strike was only suspended out of goodwill. ASUU should not be blamed if it resumes action,” Molwus cautioned.
ASUU had earlier embarked on a two-week strike on October 12 over unmet welfare and funding demands before suspending it following assurances from government officials.
