Amnesty International says at least 36 schoolchildren abducted during a NECO examination in Borno State North-Eastern Nigeria remain in captivity, calling for their immediate and unconditional release.

The rights organisation made the call through it’s official Facebook page on Saturday 25th July 2026, recalling that the students were abducted on June 29, 2026, when gunmen attacked Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to Amnesty International Nigeria, the attackers invaded the school while candidates were writing the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination, abducted 36 students and killed two teachers before fleeing the scene.
The organisation condemned the continued captivity of the students, describing the attack as a grave violation of children’s rights and another assault on education in northern Nigeria.
“Schools should be places of safety, and no child should have to choose between their education and their life,” Amnesty International Nigeria said.
It added that protecting children’s lives is the responsibility of the Nigerian government and urged authorities to safeguard schools from attacks by armed groups operating across northern Nigeria.
“The protection of children’s lives is paramount, and the Nigerian government has a duty to ensure that the country’s educational sector is not further threatened by armed groups on rampage across northern Nigeria,” the organisation said.
Amnesty International Nigeria called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of the abducted students and strengthen measures to protect schools, teachers and learners from further attacks.
