BREAKING: Nigeria, U.S. Deepen Military Cooperation Against Terrorism

By Palang Paul

Nigeria and the United States are strengthening military cooperation on counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and defence capabilities.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, disclosed this in Abuja while receiving the Commander of the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, Major General Matthew Brown.

According to a statement by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung Babatunde, the meeting reviewed ongoing joint security initiatives and explored a more result-oriented framework for future defence collaboration.

Musa identified specialised training for Special Forces, intelligence sharing, border surveillance, counter-improvised explosive device support and defence infrastructure modernisation as priority areas for expanded cooperation.

The minister also acknowledged U.S. support for counter-terrorism operations in Nigeria’s North-East, particularly around the Lake Chad Basin.

Brown, in turn, commended Nigerian troops involved in operations against ISIS-affiliated groups in Africa.

The discussions are expected to strengthen coordination between both countries in addressing terrorism and other security threats.
