UMBDF Seeks Alliance With Idoma Association Over Middle Belt Killings

By Palang Paul

The United Middle Belt Development Forum (UMBDF) USA has called for closer collaboration with the Idoma Association USA to tackle the worsening security crisis in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

The appeal was contained in a condolence letter dated July 16, 2026, and addressed to the President of Idoma Association USA, Chief Dr. Edwin Ochai, by the Secretary of UMBDF USA, Diamond Longjel.

In the letter, UMBDF expressed deep sympathy to Chief Ochai and the Idoma communities over the recurring violence, describing the attacks as a source of immense suffering, displacement and grief across the Middle Belt.

The organisation said it stands in solidarity with the Idoma Association USA and supports its advocacy and humanitarian efforts for victims affected by the persistent violence.

According to the forum, stronger partnerships among Middle Belt organisations are essential to address the complex security and humanitarian challenges confronting communities in the region.

The group also criticised what it described as the continued failure of both the federal and state governments to provide adequate security for citizens, arguing that the constitutional right to life and safety must be protected at all times.

UMBDF warned that when governments consistently fail to secure lives and property, affected communities are often left with little option but to explore lawful means of protecting themselves, while stressing the need for legitimate self-preservation within the bounds of the law.

The forum further called for urgent, comprehensive and effective security reforms that would prioritise the protection of lives and restore public confidence in government institutions.

It expressed optimism that a strategic partnership with the Idoma Association USA would strengthen advocacy efforts, provide greater support for affected communities and advance lasting solutions to the security challenges facing the Middle Belt.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the Secretary of Idoma Association USA, Mr. Sylvester Onche, and the President of UMBDF USA, Rev. Dr. Nash Pwol.
