BIRNIN GWARI: Death Toll Rises to 13 as Amnesty International Condemns Horrific Bandits’ Attack

BIRNIN GWARI, Kaduna State — Amnesty International has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Layindanauta community in Kuyello District of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, Kaduna State, where at least 13 persons, including children, were killed by armed bandits on Friday evening.

According to findings by Amnesty International, the gunmen invaded the community around 4:00 p.m., unleashing a wave of violence that left behind scenes of devastation — with homes burnt, shops looted, and residents fleeing for safety.

“The pattern of this latest attack bears all the atrocious hallmarks of the years-long campaign of terror that has plagued the people of Birnin Gwari,” the rights group said in a statement on Saturday.

Residents described the assault as one of the deadliest in recent months, noting that the attackers operated for hours without any immediate security response.

The organization expressed deep concern over what it called an “alarming escalation” of attacks, abductions for ransom, and mass killings in Birnin Gwari and across Kaduna State — warning that the persistent failure of authorities to protect citizens is fueling a climate of impunity.

“Incessant killings and the stunning failure of the authorities to end them or bring suspected perpetrators to justice continue to threaten the right to life in Nigeria,” Amnesty International stated.

Amnesty called on the Nigerian government to take decisive action to protect lives and hold the attackers accountable, urging federal and state authorities to “focus effectively on ending the violence in Birnin Gwari and other hotspots”.

The attack adds to the mounting death toll in Kaduna State’s rural communities, where residents have endured years of violent assaults from heavily armed gangs.
