Students of the University of Jos on Tuesday May 26th 2026 staged a protest at the institution’s Permanent Site hostel, blocking both the entrance and exit pedestrian gates over prolonged shortages of electricity, water, and poor sanitation conditions.
The protest which disrupted movement within the hostel area, followed several days of growing frustration among students who accused school authorities of failing to address deteriorating living conditions.
According to the students, the crisis began on Thursday last week after electricity supply to the hostel was cut, leaving residents without power and running water. Students explained that water could only be pumped when electricity was available, worsening the situation across the hostel facilities.
They also complained that toilets and other sanitary areas had remained unclean for days, raising concerns about hygiene and students’ welfare.
A student who spoke anonymously to Journalist said residents endured the conditions from Thursday through Monday with no visible intervention from the university management.
The student added that some students living outside the hostel had appealed to the protesters to reopen the gates and allow university authorities to address the situation peacefully, but the demonstrators refused to back down.
As of the time this report was filed, efforts to reach the Students’ Union Government President, Younglan Talyoung, and other university officials for comments were unsuccessful.
The protest highlights growing concerns over infrastructure and welfare conditions affecting students in Nigerian public universities.
