UNIJOS Evacuates Students Amid Rising Tension in Jos

By Palang Paul

JOS, Nigeria – The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has ordered the immediate evacuation of all students from its hostels following a sharp deterioration in security across the city, officials announced Wednesday.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Tanko Ishaya issued the directive after what the university described as “near chaotic scenarios” unfolding in areas adjacent to the campus on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. Authorities stated that the escalating tensions had begun to pose a direct threat to the safety of students residing in university accommodation.

In a swift response, Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, facilitated the evacuation by providing transport services. According to a statement from the university’s management, the governor’s office has granted the buses special authorization to operate despite the imposition of a curfew in the city.

The evacuation is being staged in two phases to accommodate students based on their destinations.

·Wednesday, April 1, from 3:00 PM: Students whose families reside within Jos and its immediate environs.
· Thursday, April 2, from 8:00 AM: Students whose parents or guardians live outside Jos and the surrounding areas.

University management assured that adequate security personnel have been deployed to protect the vacated hostels and the broader university premises during the exodus.

“Management is exploring all means within its disposal to ensure that the University is safe,” Prof. Ishaya said in a statement, pledging to communicate further updates as the situation develops.

The university has established hotlines for students and parents seeking information regarding the evacuation: 08035895323 and 08033848145.

In a nod to the somber mood gripping the institution, the Vice Chancellor’s message concluded with a plea for steadfastness: “In fragile times like these, may our confidence in the LORD be steadfast.”

The University of Jos, located in Plateau State’s capital, has periodically faced security challenges due to the region’s complex socio-political dynamics. The evacuation marks one of the most significant interventions by both the university and state government in response to the latest surge in tensions.
