The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) says American forces have launched fresh airstrikes on key Iranian military targets to weaken Tehran’s capacity to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
The operation, completed at about 9 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, July 20, targeted multiple Iranian military installations linked to operations around the strategic waterway, according to a statement released by CENTCOM.
The U.S. military said the strikes hit Iranian military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, as well as air defence systems believed to be supporting attacks on international shipping.
CENTCOM explained that the operation was aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to threaten civilian vessels navigating one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.
“The strikes targeted Iranian military command centers, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and air defense systems to degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking commercial vessels flowing through the Strait of Hormuz,” the command stated.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, serving as a major route for global crude oil exports. The waterway has witnessed heightened tensions in recent months following repeated attacks on commercial ships, prompting increased military patrols by the United States and its allies.
Despite the security challenges, CENTCOM said commercial shipping through the corridor has continued uninterrupted due to sustained maritime protection operations by U.S. forces.
According to the command, American forces have facilitated the safe transit of approximately 900 commercial vessels carrying about 450 million barrels of crude oil since early May.
The U.S. military maintained that its forces remain fully prepared to respond to any further threats against civilian mariners and international freedom of navigation.
“American forces remain postured and prepared to hold Iran accountable for unwarranted aggression toward civilian mariners seeking to freely and openly transit the strait,” CENTCOM added.
The latest military action marks another escalation in the standoff between Washington and Tehran, with the United States insisting its operations are intended to safeguard international shipping and preserve the free flow of global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran, however, has vowed to maintain its operations around the strategic waterway, accusing the United States of violating existing ceasefire understandings and escalating regional tensions.
The renewed hostilities have contributed to rising global energy prices, as governments and international observers continue to call for restraint amid fears of further disruptions to oil supplies and maritime trade.
