A United States congressman has pointed to new threats from an Islamic State-affiliated group as definitive evidence that violence against Christian communities in Nigeria is religious persecution.
Congressman Riley Moore, in a post on his verified X account on Thursday, stated that recent statements attributed to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) should end any debate about the motives behind such attacks.
His comments came in response to posts circulating online that showed an image, allegedly released by ISWAP, depicting a Christian village in Adamawa State, Nigeria, on fire.
“If there were any remaining doubts that Christians in Nigeria are being targeted for their faith in Jesus Christ, this should end that debate,” Moore wrote.
He dismissed alternative explanations often cited for the ongoing conflict. “This isn’t about land usage, ‘climate change,’ or any other argument the Left wants to make. This is persecution of our brothers and sisters for their faith in Christ, plain and simple,” the congressman added.
The reported ISWAP threat highlights the persistent security crisis in parts of northern and central Nigeria, where militant groups and armed gangs frequently carry out deadly raids on villages.
Congressman Moore has been a vocal commentator on the security situation in Nigeria, previously linking U.S. military actions in the country to counter-terrorism efforts against groups like ISIS.
