Traditional Ruler Killed in Plateau Days After Son’s Release

A traditional ruler in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State has been shot dead at his residence, days after his son was abducted and hours after his release.

The victim, Jatau Yohanna Samkwar, the Mishkakhang of the Mwaghavul in Bokkos, was reportedly killed at his residence in Daffo on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Local sources said the killing occurred hours after his son, who was abducted from the same community, was released by his captors without payment of ransom.

The Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), Bokkos Branch, confirmed the traditional ruler’s death in a statement shared on social media.

The association said Samkwar died from injuries sustained during an attack on his residence, which it attributed to suspected armed Fulani militia.

Expressing grief over the killing, the association’s spokesman, Lawrence Dawat David, said the traditional ruler’s death came at a critical time for the community.

“His demise came at a time that his wise counsel is needed the most,” David said, praying for strength for the bereaved family, the MDA Bokkos Branch and the entire Mwaghavul community.

The killing adds to security concerns in Plateau State, where communities have continued to face attacks and other security threats.

The Nigeria Times will continue to follow developments surrounding the killing.
