Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General,
The presidency announced on Tuesday In a statement issued by the State House, Tinubu said Egbetokun stepped down after submitting a resignation letter citing pressing family considerations. The president expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to Nigeria Police Force and his efforts to strengthen internal security during his tenure.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with provisions of the Police Act.
Tinubu said Disu’s appointment takes immediate effect and is aimed at ensuring continuity in leadership amid ongoing security challenges across Nigeria. He described the acting police chief as an experienced officer with strong operational and leadership credentials capable of providing steady direction for the force.
The president also said he would convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General. Following the council’s recommendation, the nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation, as required by law.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and enhancing the professionalism and accountability of the police.
