Tinubu Appoints Jonah Jang’s Son Yakubu Senior Special Assistant

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Yakubu Jang, son of former Plateau State Governor Senator Jonah David Jang, as Senior Special Assistant in the Office of the President.

The appointment was announced on Saturday 1st August 2026 in Jos, Plateau State, by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the grand celebration of Senator Jang’s 80th birthday and the public presentation of his autobiography at the Tamarald Event Centre.

Representing President Tinubu at the event, Shettima conveyed the President’s goodwill message before announcing Yakubu Jang’s appointment, describing it as a reflection of the administration’s commitment to recognising competence, loyalty and promoting inclusive governance through the accommodation of diverse voices.

The announcement drew applause from dignitaries at the ceremony, which was attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, serving governors, federal and state government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, associates of the Jang family and other prominent guests from across the country.

The appointment coincided with nationwide tributes marking Senator Jang’s 80th birthday in recognition of his decades of public service. Jang served in the Nigerian Air Force, was Military Administrator of Benue State, completed two terms as Governor of Plateau State and later represented Plateau North Senatorial District in the Senate.

As part of the celebration, the former governor unveiled his autobiography titled Airman to Politics: My Life, chronicling his journey from military service to political leadership.

Senator Jang had previously faced a ₦6.3 billion corruption trial instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He was arraigned alongside former Government House cashier Yusuf Pam in 2018 over alleged diversion of state funds. Both pleaded not guilty, and the Plateau State High Court discharged and acquitted Jang of all charges on September 2, 2022.
