Sowore Declares 2027 Presidential Bid, Vows to Tackle Nigeria’s Power Crisis, Unemployment and Insecurity

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, aiming to unseat incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Sowore, who ran under the banner of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 elections, pledged that if elected, his administration would prioritize resolving Nigeria’s persistent electricity crisis, unemployment and escalating insecurity.

In an interview with The Guardian over the weekend in Abuja, Sowore, who is also the founder of the online investigative platform Sahara Reporters, stated that his ambition to lead the country remains undiminished. He distinguished himself from what he described as fair-weather politicians, asserting that his consistent engagement in socio-political advocacy sets him apart from those who emerge only during election cycles.

Sowore positioned the revamping of Nigeria’s power sector as a central pillar of his prospective economic agenda, describing a stable electricity supply as the essential foundation for national transformation.

“The whole idea of energy is what will bring about an industrial revolution in this country,” Sowore stated. “If we get power right, we can stimulate industrial growth, tackle unemployment, boost our GDP, and, by extension, address the underlying conditions that fuel our security challenges.”

He argued that a reliable power supply would catalyse job creation and economic stability, which are critical components in mitigating the country’s widespread insecurity.
