The Irigwe Nation laid to rest today nine victims who were brutally killed during the June 16, 2026 attack on Angwan Magaji community in Kamaru Ward, Kauru Local Government Area of Southern Kaduna.
According to community leaders and survivors, armed men identified by residents as suspected Fulani militias stormed the predominantly Christian farming community late at night, opening fire on homes as terrified families fled for safety. The attack claimed the lives of nine people, including five children, one woman, and three adult men, while at least eleven others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The victims were identified as Jerry Doctor (51), Danlami Magani (49), Sunday Chibi (53), Rita Abdullahi (45), Sunday Elkan (5), Esther Kefas (5), Happy Friday (6), Moses Daddy (4), and Daddy Ibrahim (28).
Among the injured were women, elderly residents, and children, several of whom required emergency treatment before being referred to hospitals in Kafanchan due to the severity of their injuries.
Eyewitnesses said the attack occurred while members of the community were mourning the death of an elderly relative. During the assault, Catechist Ishaya Musa of St. Monica’s Catholic Church was abducted, beaten, and reportedly asked to pay a ₦10 million ransom before he was eventually released with injuries.
Residents said heavy rainfall that night delayed communication and slowed emergency response efforts, leaving many victims without immediate medical assistance.
Today’s burial is another painful reminder of the recurring violence that has plagued Southern Kaduna for decades. Community leaders say countless lives have been lost, families displaced, and communities devastated by repeated attacks, yet many perpetrators remain unidentified or have not been brought to justice.
As grieving families bid farewell to their loved ones, they continue to call on the Nigerian government and security agencies to conduct thorough investigations, ensure accountability, strengthen security across vulnerable communities, and take concrete steps to prevent further attacks.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may lasting peace and justice return to Southern Kaduna.
