The Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, Nigeria, is witnessing a resurgence of deadly attacks targeting ethnic minorities and being carried out by suspected Fulani terrorists. The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard expressed deep concern over these renewed assaults, which have persisted despite peace agreements facilitated by the Nigerian military. Since May 2024, at least 30 people have been killed, and more than 1,000 farms destroyed.
In a press release, the BCDC Vanguard reported the deaths of ten members in the latest attacks on the Daffo and Kwatas communities, which occurred on September 3, 2024. The coordinated assaults followed a week of sporadic violence that claimed 16 lives.
The attack in Daffo began around 7 pm, targeting residents in a commercial area near a military base. According to the BCDC Vanguard, the attackers, described as Fulani-speaking terrorists, launched a violent assault that resulted in the deaths of at least seven people. Simultaneously, similar attacks in the Kwatas and Ambul-Barkish areas left four persons dead.
The BCDC Vanguard commended the Sector Commander of the Niherian Army Special Task Force cade-named Operation Safe Haven for responding promptly to the attack but called for an investigation into the conduct of the soldiers stationed at the nearby military base in Daffo.
The Council’s leadership expressed frustration and fear, stating that, “Our people have never launched attacks on Fulani residents, yet we have been subjected to persistent armed attacks since 2013, which have resulting in over 500 deaths and the forceful annexation of our communities.”
The BCDC Vanguard is demanding justice for the victims and immediate action from both local authorities and the international community. Their demands include adequate compensation for the victims and the disbandment of terrorist camps in the area.
