A pregnant woman identified as Ruth Nen Maurice has been killed in a road accident in Jos, Plateau State, after a driver allegedly fleeing officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) rammed into her along a busy roadside.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 19 2026, in the city centre, where the victim was reportedly waiting for transportation to a hospital for an antenatal appointment when the speeding vehicle struck her.
Eyewitnesses said the driver was attempting to evade VIO operatives at a checkpoint and carried out a dangerous maneuver that ended in the fatal collision.
Friends and residents described the incident as heartbreaking, revealing that the deceased was heavily pregnant with twins and only weeks away from delivery.
A close associate of the victim, Ewan Boss Julz Odumu, who announced the tragedy in a Facebook post on Wednesday, expressed deep grief over her death.
“Ruth Nen Maurice My dear, it’s hard to post this but God knows best,” he wrote.
Odumu further lamented that the unborn twins also lost their lives in the crash, blaming the tragedy on reckless driving and the desperate attempt to escape enforcement officials.
“A mother who was preparing to welcome twins back home never made it alive. Her unborn babies never got the chance to cry, breathe, or see this world because of somebody’s reckless decision,” he added.
The spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the driver had been arrested.
According to him, investigations are ongoing and the suspect will be charged to court upon completion of police findings.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Plateau State Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer, Jonathan Zam, were unsuccessful as calls and messages sent to his phone were not answered as of press time.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, with many calling for stricter safety measures and accountability during traffic enforcement operations in the state.
