The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State Nigeria, in a move authorities say underscores a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial conduct.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, sparked outrage after reports emerged that a police officer discharged his weapon unlawfully, leading to Ogidi’s death. In response, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, directed the immediate withdrawal of all officers linked to the shooting from the Delta State Command to Force Headquarters in Abuja for expedited disciplinary review.
Following investigations by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and other internal mechanisms, authorities found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in “gross violation” of Force Order 237 and other established rules guiding the use of firearms.
Police authorities described the officer’s conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of his duty to protect lives.
Based on the findings, the FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable. The IGP has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
Upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial killing.
Reaffirming the Force’s position, the IGP stressed that no officer has the right to take a life outside the bounds of the law, warning that violations would attract the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.
He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that justice would be pursued transparently to reinforce public trust and accountability within the Force.
The Police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, while reiterating its commitment to professionalism, human rights, and accountability across its ranks.
