Plateau Youth Group Demands Curfew Review After Three Killed in Mangu Ambush

By Palang Paul

The Mwaghavul Youth Movement (MYM) has called for an immediate review of the 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State following an ambush that killed three men at the Kyikyau–Gyambwas boundary.

The group made the call after the victims were reportedly attacked at about 7:39 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the boundary between Kyikyau Community and Gyambwas in Mangu Halle District.

The victims were identified as Samson Dachet, 45years old; Gambo Fwangyil, 50years old; and Zughumnan Bamaiyi, 35years old.

In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Tubwot Joël Sunday, on behalf of the movement’s President, Comr. Kyesmang Jonathan Yusuf, the group condemned the attack and described the incident as deeply disturbing.

The movement said the three men were among residents keeping watch over their community when they were allegedly ambushed by armed attackers.

The attack occurred hours after the Plateau State Government’s newly imposed dusk-to-dawn curfew took effect, raising concerns within the group about the safety of communities that remain vulnerable to attacks after dark.

The Mwaghavul Youth Movement questioned the effectiveness of the restriction if law-abiding residents are confined to their homes while armed attackers can still move into communities and launch attacks.

The group argued that communities that depend on organised vigilance to protect homes, farms and residents could be placed at greater risk if movement restrictions are not accompanied by adequate security deployment.

It, however, stressed that it was not demanding the abandonment of the curfew, but called for the measure to be reviewed and strengthened to ensure that vulnerable communities are adequately protected during the restricted hours.

The movement urged the Plateau State Government and security agencies to increase patrols, strengthen rapid-response capacity, improve intelligence gathering and maintain appropriate engagement with recognised community vigilance structures.

It also called for urgent measures to prevent further attacks in Mangu and other affected communities, stressing that security restrictions should not leave residents defenceless.

The Plateau State Government imposed the dusk-to-dawn curfew on September 21, 2026, covering Mangu, Barkin Ladi and Bokkos Local Government Areas, as part of measures aimed at maintaining public order and addressing emerging security threats.

The circumstances surrounding Tuesday night’s attack and the response of security agencies were not detailed in the statement issued by the youth movement.
