PLASU Students Celebrate Colorful Rag Day as Student Week Kicks Off

By Palang Paul

The Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, was recently lit up with color, music, and excitement as students marked their annual Rag Day, kicking off the university’s much-anticipated Student Week.

The event was organized by the Students’ Union Government (SUG), brought together students from all departments and levels in a lively celebration of creativity, expression, and unity.

Rag Day is one of the most celebrated and visually striking traditions in many Nigerian universities, and PLASU is no exception.

It is a day when students dress in worn-out, mismatched, or creatively styled “ragged” clothing, turning the campus into a festive scene filled with laughter, energetic dances, and light-hearted fun. Beyond just a display of humor and fashion, the day serves as a symbolic release from academic stress, giving students an avenue to unwind after long periods of lectures, tests, and assignments.

The significance of Rag Day goes beyond entertainment. It is deeply rooted in student culture, representing freedom of expression and a temporary break from the formalities of academic life. Students often take to the streets or parade within the campus, a tradition that stems from older university customs across Nigeria.

This year’s Rag Day at PLASU also served as the opening ceremony for the university’s Student Week—a week-long program organized by the SUG to welcome students back to campus and reignite student engagement before academic activities fully resume. According to the SUG, the Student Week is designed to promote interaction among students, foster unity, and create lasting memories that enrich the overall campus experience.

The lineup of activities for the Student Week includes talent shows, jersey day, cultural displays, symposiums, and award nights. Each day brings a new opportunity for students to express themselves, develop talents, and connect with peers in an informal and relaxed setting.

As the celebrations continue, the Student Week stands out as an important reminder of the role of social events in holistic student development. It provides a balance between academics and recreation and contributes significantly to the mental well-being of the student body.

This cherished tradition remains a highlight on PLASU’s calendar, eagerly anticipated year after year. Rag Day, in particular, continues to symbolize the vibrant and dynamic spirit of PLASU students—bold, expressive, and united.
