The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University Bokkos branch, has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of a new salary structure for lecturers at the institution.
In a statement issued Tuesday 12th May 2026, the union urged the Plateau State Government to immediately implement the revised salary scheme agreed under the Federal Government/ASUU framework, warning that continued delays could cripple academic activities at the university.
ASUU-PLASU said the salary template was submitted to the university management in February 2026, but lecturers are still being paid under the old structure despite worsening economic realities.
The union accused the government and university management of expanding the institution through increased student enrollment and the creation of new faculties without corresponding improvements in staff welfare.
According to the statement signed by the branch chairman, Dr. Vincent Choji, and secretary, Dr. Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, lecturers are now carrying heavier workloads under difficult conditions.
“Members are working harder than ever to teach and mould the character of students,” the union stated, adding that the welfare of academic staff has remained neglected.
ASUU-PLASU also raised alarm over what it described as growing health concerns among lecturers, revealing that more than three members had recently died from stress and heart-related complications.
The union further cited insecurity on campus, rising transportation costs, and inadequate staff accommodation as major challenges affecting productivity and staff wellbeing.
It warned that failure by the government to urgently address the issues could force the union to commence a “comprehensive and indefinite strike action.”
