The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the Federal Government has suspended the payment of upkeep allowances to beneficiaries of the student loan scheme.
In a statement issued on Friday May 29,2026, NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, described the reports as false, misleading, and deliberately crafted to create panic and confusion among students and the general public.
Oluwatuyi clarified that neither the Federal Government nor NELFUND had issued any directive announcing the suspension of upkeep allowance payments under the scheme.
“The publications currently making rounds on social media are entirely fabricated and should be disregarded by the public,” the statement said.
NELFUND also refuted the authenticity of a viral newspaper cover allegedly published by the Nigerian Tribune, insisting that the material was fake and did not originate from the media organisation.
The Fund warned students and members of the public against relying on unverified information, especially content circulated through unofficial social media channels.
NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and continuity in the implementation of the student loan programme, urging beneficiaries to seek updates only through its official communication platforms.
The student loan initiative, introduced by the Federal Government to expand access to higher education, provides financial support, including institutional fees and upkeep allowances, to eligible Nigerian students.
