Nigerians experienced a major nationwide blackout on Monday, December 29, 2025, following the collapse of the national electricity grid.
The system failure occurred in the afternoon, causing power supply to plummet across most of the country.
Data from the national grid operator showed that at 3:12 p.m., electricity allocation to distribution companies had drastically fallen.
Only two of the country’s power distributors received any supply: Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company got 30 megawatts (MW) and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company received 20 MW. All other distribution companies, including those serving Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola, were allocated zero megawatts. The total distributed electricity stood at just 50 MW, a fraction of the nation’s normal requirement.
This incident is the latest in a recurring pattern of national grid failures, raising persistent concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. The collapse has disrupted homes, businesses, and essential services.
While the Nigerian National Grid stated that restoration efforts were underway, neither the Transmission Company of Nigeria nor the Federal Ministry of Power had issued an official statement explaining the cause of the collapse or providing a timeline for full restoration as of Monday evening.
