Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has approved the procurement of about 500 truckloads of fertiliser and slashed the price of a 50kg bag to ₦20,000 for farmers, in a major intervention aimed at boosting food production and lowering cultivation costs across the state.
The subsidy, which takes immediate effect, reduces the cost of a 50kg bag of fertiliser from the current market price of between ₦50,000 and ₦53,000 to ₦20,000, representing one of the state’s biggest agricultural support programmes in recent years.
The approval was announced in a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, PhD on Monday, who said the government had already procured approximately 500 truckloads of fertiliser for distribution to farmers across Plateau State’s 17 local government areas.
Governor Mutfwang said the intervention is designed to ease the financial burden on farmers, improve access to quality farming inputs, increase agricultural productivity and strengthen food security at a time of rising production costs.
He described agriculture as a central pillar of his administration’s economic development strategy, saying the fertiliser subsidy directly responds to persistent complaints by farmers over the soaring prices of essential inputs.
According to the governor, the initiative is expected to reduce production costs, increase crop yields, improve farmers’ profit margins and stimulate rural economic growth while advancing Plateau State’s ambition of becoming Nigeria’s leading hub for agriculture and agribusiness.
Mutfwang said the programme also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly efforts to expand food production and cushion Nigerians against prevailing economic challenges.
Although the official flag-off of the 2026 Fertiliser Subsidy Programme is scheduled for Friday, July 10, the governor directed that sales begin immediately to ensure farmers benefit from the intervention without losing valuable planting time.
He urged farmers across Plateau State to take advantage of the subsidised fertiliser, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustained investments in agriculture, rural development and policies that improve livelihoods and guarantee long-term food security.
The latest intervention underscores the Mutfwang administration’s renewed push to transform agriculture into a major driver of economic growth, employment and sustainable development in Plateau State.
