Journalist Zainab Sadiq has regained freedom from the Department of State Services following days in detention, activist Omoyele Sowore has announced.
Sowore confirmed her release in a post on his verified X account late Friday, thanking Nigerians at home and abroad for mounting pressure.
Zainab, who works with Sowore, was detained by the DSS after she was reportedly arrested at a Lagos airport over allegations involving a drone.
Her detention sparked widespread condemnation from journalists, human rights groups and concerned Nigerians, who demanded her immediate and unconditional release.
Reacting to the development, Sowore described her release as a victory against repression and praised those who spoke out against her detention.
“Ms. Zainab Sadiq is finally free from the grip of repression!” Sowore said.
He added that the sustained intervention and pressure from Nigerians within and outside the country contributed to her release.
“When people of conscience unite and stand against injustice, repression can be defeated. Welcome back, Zainab,” he added.
The DSS had earlier confirmed Zainab’s detention amid growing calls for authorities to respect press freedom and the rights of journalists in Nigeria.
