In a significant boost to electoral preparedness, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has secured a firm commitment from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to provide comprehensive airlift and aerial surveillance support for the 2027 General Elections.
The pledge was made on Tuesday by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, during a strategic working visit to INEC’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to overcoming the nation’s formidable logistical hurdles to ensure a credible electoral process.
Prof. Amupitan welcomed the Air Chief’s support, emphasizing that the integrity of any election is fundamentally tied to the effectiveness of its logistics. “The election can only be as good as the logistics. Failure to plan is planning to fail,” the INEC Chairman stated. “Nigerians are looking ahead to the next general election and they expect the best from us.”
To set the stage for this massive undertaking, Prof. Amupitan confirmed that the Commission has already released the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 polls, in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026. According to this timeline, the Presidential and National Assembly elections are slated for January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections will follow on February 16, 2027.
The INEC Chairman highlighted the persistent challenge of deploying sensitive materials and personnel to Nigeria’s vast and difficult terrain, making the partnership with the Air Force not just beneficial, but essential.
“We recognise the ongoing challenges we face, particularly in deploying personnel and materials to difficult terrains,” Prof. Amupitan said. “That is why this collaboration is not just important, it is necessary.”
He specifically praised the Air Force for its rapid-response capabilities during recent electoral exercises, including the November 2025 Anambra Governorship Election, the February 2026 FCT Area Council Election, and several off-cycle polls. “At very short notice, you were able to deliver. Even when we encountered minor challenges, you stepped in promptly to ensure there were no logistical gaps,” he added.
In a move to institutionalize this cooperation, Prof. Amupitan announced the formation of a joint technical team comprising officers from both INEC and NAF. This team will be tasked with enhancing operational planning, coordination, and early identification of potential deployment challenges. “If we work together proactively, we can address challenges before they arise,” he noted.
Responding, Air Marshal Aneke congratulated the INEC Chairman on his appointment and reassured him of the Air Force’s unwavering commitment to democratic consolidation in Africa’s largest democracy.
The Chief of the Air Staff outlined a two-pronged approach to the support: logistics and security. He confirmed that NAF’s heavy and medium-lift aircraft are undergoing routine maintenance to be fully operational for deploying electoral officials and materials to remote areas. Beyond transport, the Air Force will deploy advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets, including drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
“These assets can remain airborne for extended periods and assist in the early detection of potential security threats,” Air Marshal Aneke explained, promising a watchful eye over the electoral environment.
To ensure seamless integration on voting day, he also proposed joint simulation exercises between the two institutions to identify and rectify any operational gaps well in advance of the 2027 polls.
Both leaders concluded the meeting with a shared vision, expressing confidence that this deepened collaboration will pave the way for secure, orderly, and highly credible elections.
