INEC Extends 2027 Candidates Submission Deadline

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.

The commission announced the three-day extension in a statement issued on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

INEC said the deadline, which expired on Saturday, July 11, has now been shifted to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

The decision followed an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council on behalf of political parties reportedly facing technical challenges while uploading candidates’ details to the commission’s nomination portal.

The statement was signed by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved the extension of the deadline for submission of lists of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly Elections by political parties,” the statement read.

INEC said the extension was aimed at promoting inclusivity while ensuring the nomination process remained within the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“The extension underscores the commission’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity in its practices while acting within the ambit of the law,” it added.

The electoral body urged political parties to use the additional three-day window to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates before the new deadline expires.

INEC had earlier insisted that the July 11 deadline would not be extended despite concerns raised by political parties over difficulties encountered on the nomination portal.
