INEC Declares Viral Governorship Candidates Announcement Fake, Warns Public

By Faith Chondol

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as fake an online publication claiming to be a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in six states, warning Nigerians against sharing the fraudulent information.

In a public notice, the Commission said the publication, which mentions Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano states, did not originate from INEC.

INEC urged members of the public to disregard the announcement and avoid circulating it, stressing that any claim suggesting it had issued a special notice concerning governorship candidates in the six states was false.

The electoral body advised Nigerians to verify election-related information through its official communication channels rather than rely on unverified online publications that could mislead the public.

According to the Commission, its official platforms include its website, www.inecnigeria.org, Facebook page, INEC Nigeria, and social media accounts on X and Instagram, both operating under the handle @inecnigeria.

The Commission also identified its news portal, www.inecnews.com, as an official source of information.

INEC further urged the public to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of electoral announcements before sharing them, as part of efforts to prevent the spread of false information.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to providing accurate information to the public and called on Nigerians to rely exclusively on its official communication channels for authentic electoral updates.
