A yet-to-be-identified man has been found beheaded on farmland within the University of Jos, sparking fear across the university community.
The victim’s headless body was discovered on Tuesday morning within the university environment in Jos, Plateau State.
The middle-aged man, believed to be a farmer, was reportedly killed by unknown assailants who severed his head and fled with it.
A 300-level student of the university, Pius Atok, said the body was discovered on a farm, noting that the deceased was neither a student nor a staff member of the institution.
“The body was found this morning on a farm around the university community.
“From what we gathered, the victim was neither a student nor a member of staff of the university,” Atok said.
A senior university official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the victim regularly cultivated crops on the farmland where his body was found.
The official said the farmer was known to arrive at the farm early in the morning, raising suspicions that he may have been attacked shortly after arriving.
“What actually happened is still unclear, but from the nature of the attack, it appears those responsible came specifically to kill him and made away with his head,” the official said.
The source added that relatives of the victim had been contacted, while arrangements were being made to evacuate his body.
The University of Jos management was said to be aware of the incident and is expected to communicate further through its Information Directorate.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, for confirmation were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
