At least five people were killed and several others injured after gunmen opened fire at traders and customers in Mangu, Plateau State.

The attack occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the popular Friday market, according to Bulus Dabit, President of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA) World-wide.

Dabit said the attackers fired repeatedly at a vehicle leaving the vegetable market, killing two women and a young man at the scene.

He added that two other victims later died while receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, while several injured persons were being referred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).

An eyewitness, Anointed Inusa, said the gunmen, who were armed with what he described as sophisticated weapons, shot continuously for more than 10 minutes.

Another witness, Manji Ezekiel, said the attack triggered panic as hundreds of traders and customers fled in different directions, abandoning their goods.

“It was chaotic as people ran in all directions to stay safe,” Ezekiel said, adding that three people were killed at the scene and several others injured.

The MDA Director of Public Affairs, Friday Derwam, condemned the attack and called on security agencies to deploy intelligence and technology to identify and arrest those responsible.

The latest attack comes amid renewed concerns over insecurity in Mangu, with the MDA claiming that more than 750 Mwaghavul people have been killed in attacks since 2023.

The casualty figures and circumstances surrounding the attack could not immediately be independently verified, while further details on the identities and conditions of the injured victims remain awaited.
