The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said it has not received any official confirmation regarding reports that 100 pupils abducted in Niger State have been released.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Chairman of CAN in Niger State, Bishop Bulus Yohanna, said the association would welcome the news if true, but stressed that no verified information had reached the affected communities or church authorities.
Bishop Yohanna noted that CAN and the families of the abducted children have continued to pray and hope for their safe return. He added that while reports of the release would bring great relief and joy, the association had not been formally informed by security agencies or government officials.
According to him, CAN remains hopeful and is looking forward to the release of all remaining abducted pupils.
The students were abducted on November 21, 2025, when armed bandits attacked St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Niger State. A total of 315 persons were taken during the attack, including 303 students and 12 teachers.
Fifty of the pupils reportedly escaped within the first day and were later reunited with their families.
Last week, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, visited the school and assured parents and school authorities that the abducted children were safe and would be brought home soon.
On Sunday, reports surfaced claiming that 100 of the abducted pupils had been released, with Channels Television reporting that the Federal Government was instrumental in securing their freedom. However, CAN insists it is still awaiting official confirmation of the development.
