BYM Demands Arrest of Injured Bandits, Accuses Gafdan Media Team of Terror Propaganda

The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has called on security agencies to arrest five suspected attackers who reportedly escaped with injuries after a deadly assault on Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, while also demanding an investigation into the operators of the GAFDAN Media Team Facebook platform over alleged misinformation.

The association made the call in a statement issued on Sunday 19th July 2026 by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, following reports alleging that three herders were killed by Berom youths in the area.

BYM rejected the claims, describing them as false and a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the circumstances surrounding the violence. The association alleged that armed men it identified as Fulani terrorists from Mahanga attacked Jol community, killing 48-year-old Thomas Damang and injuring three residents—identified as Ishaku Pam, 22, Ezra Yakubu, 28, and Shedrack Danladi, 34.

According to the statement, local vigilantes, supported by security personnel, repelled the attack, resulting in the deaths of three of the assailants, while five others allegedly escaped with gunshot wounds.

The group urged security agencies to intensify efforts to locate and arrest the injured suspects, arguing that their injuries present an opportunity for law enforcement to identify, investigate and prosecute those responsible for the attack.

BYM further accused the GAFDAN Media Team Facebook platform of disseminating false information by portraying the deceased attackers as innocent herders rather than members of the armed group involved in the assault.

The association said repeated circulation of what it described as misleading narratives risks undermining security operations, obstructing justice for victims and emboldening perpetrators of violence.

It called on the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to identify and investigate those behind the platform, alleging that coordinated misinformation has become part of the wider security challenge facing Plateau State.

BYM also appealed to the Federal Government, the National Human Rights Commission, civil society organisations, the international community and global media to pay closer attention to what it described as disinformation surrounding the Plateau conflict.

The association maintained that lasting peace would require accountability not only for those responsible for violent attacks but also for individuals who deliberately spread false information capable of shielding criminal activities.
